Overview
The most influential and frequently cited pathology classic is now in its Fifth Edition, with thoroughly revised chapters and over 3,000 brand-new full-color illustrations. This two-volume work provides comprehensive, current information on the principles and techniques of cytopathology and the cytologic evaluation of benign and malignant disorders at every anatomic site.
This edition provides greatly expanded coverage of the interpretation of aspirated cell samples. Innovations in the practice of cytopathology and data on molecular biology and cytogenetics have been incorporated into the organ system chapters. This edition also has a greater focus on avoiding diagnostic errors.
A bound-in image bank DVD is included in this edition.
"...a thorough revision of one of the most frequently cited & influential works in its field...new coverage of structure & ultrastructure of cells, molecular biology techniques, in situ hybridization, flow cytometry, and more."

Description:This fifth edition pathology textbook provides the most comprehensive and systematic review of all areas in diagnostic cytology and its correlation with histology. The previous edition was published in 1992.
Purpose:In this beautifully done book, the authors have certainly met and even surpassed their objectives to "create a textbook that covers, in depth, the broad field of human pathology through the prism of cells and corresponding tissue lesions.
Audience:It serves as a source of knowledge and references for cytopathologists, residents and cytopathology fellows, cytotechnologists, and even basic scientists who are interested in human cells and tissues.
Features:The book begins with a general cytology chapter introducing the history and principles of diagnostic cytology, and the fundamental concepts of cell biology. Then, the authors use an organ-based approach and start with exfoliative cytology followed by aspiration cytology to cover the entire realm of cytology. The book ends with a section of techniques in diagnostic cytology covering daily laboratory operations as well as more advanced techniques, including molecular biology and digital analysis of cells and tissues. Quality control, an important issue in cytology, is covered in both section I and section III. This book differs from many others in cytopathology in that it stresses the histopathologic bases of cytologic diagnoses. The majority of cytology pictures are paralleled by their corresponding histology illustrations with detailed legends. Within each organ system, the histology and cytology features are described for every diagnostic entity. The important points of each entity are bolded to stand out for the readers. The diagnostic cytologic criteria are clearly stated in each disease entity, with the added comments of the author's own experience. As a cytopathologist, I particularly like the discussion of sources of diagnostic errors. The comprehensive text is supplemented by many easy to use tables. New to this edition, with the exception of a few irreplaceable black-and-white photographs and drawings, are brilliant full-color illustrations and drawings. The references are complete and up to date.
Assessment:This book serves as the most comprehensive and useful guide for pathologists who have a special passion for cytopathology. Dr. Koss states in the preface of this edition that "With the aging process taking its toll, it is unlikely that future editions of this book, if any, will be written or edited by the same authors." As a cytopathologist growing up with this book on my shelf, I hope this would not be the last edition of Koss' Diagnostic Cytology.
