Overview

This manual is aimed at those who wish to test their knowledge of ultrastructural pathology. The format is simple for ease of reading. Photographs of micrographs are shown on a right-hand page with a brief statement and multiple choice questions. On the facing page are the answer and explanation, as well as referral to the reference section.

The manual was written to help those who wish to interpret structures seen under an electron microscope and to determine their diagnostic significance. Selected are over 50 representative cases that reflect a broad spectrum of disease. The book is designed for the non-expert who gain a deeper understanding of ultrastructural pathology after working through the cases.

The intent is to teach the reader specific diagnostic patterns.

Also included are those normal structures that are commonly misidentified or confused with other structures by the novice.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Elizabeth E. Sengupta, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This is an expanded second edition, after almost ten years, of an ultrastructural teaching manual. The question-and-answer format covers 76 ultrastructural features helpful in diagnosis of neoplastic as well as non-neoplastic diseases and provides a useful, educational comment on each feature.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a self-teaching and self-evaluation manual for those interested in having a working knowledge of ultrastructure features of the cell and matrix. This purpose is fulfilled in a limited manner because of size constraints, so it does not cover all features that could be considered essential to basic knowledge of ultrastructure.
Audience: The intended and actual audience of this book, written by the foremost authority on ultrastructure of the cell and cell matrix, includes pathologists-in-training and others wishing to acquire a knowledge of diagnostic transmission electron microscopy features.
Features: The illustrations used for each of the ultrastructural features covered are excellent. No references are given, but sections on further reading cite the author's other books, which do have exhaustive, up-to-date reference lists. The book is well indexed, and useful diagrams of a few difficult-to-conceptualize structures and a nomogram for determining size of objects in electron micrographs are provided in an appendix.
Assessment: This is a fun book for those motivated to learn something of the ultrastructure of cells and matrix. It should be well used by pathology residents, and should be a part of any surgical pathology library in teaching hospitals.
