In addition there is a section on the ultrastructure of intracellular infection including viruses, prokaryotes, and protozoa.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introduction to the interpretation of ultrastructure in biologic material.
Audience: The stated audience is graduate students in fields in which electron microscopy plays a useful role in scientific study and pathology residents.
Features: The book features excellent ultramicrographs, a good balance between historical and current references, and two useful appendixes β ultrastructure of toxicologic disease references by toxin and of neoplasia references by tumor.
Assessment: This book is a much needed, excellent introduction to ultrastructural cell biology covering normal and abnormal ultrastructure including cell injury, toxic change, metabolic disorders and neoplastic changes in general. It has an excellent section on intracellular infection covering a wide variety of viral diseases and protozoa including the newly recognized microsporans. This book is suitable for both cell biology and pathology departmental libraries and would be valuable for pathologists doing diagnostic electron microscopy.
