From The Critics
Reviewer: Eileen J. Plunkett, RN, PhD(Boston College School of Nursing)Description: This compact, spiral-bound handbook contains clear and succinct information on the principles of dosage calculations with appropriate attention to safety in drug administration. The authors devote much of the text to calculation examples for illustration and for immediate practice and feedback by the reader.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide practicing and student nurses in all specialty areas with information on current practice in dosage calculation.
Audience: The book is intended to update the knowledge and skill of practicing nurses as well as provide a foundation for nursing students. With its clear presentation of systems of delivering medications to clients in a variety of health care settings, it would also be helpful for beginning medical students.
Features: For a small handbook, the black-and-white illustrations are quite clear, helpful, and well chosen. Charts are used to good advantage to summarize pertinent information that can be readily found for quick reference. The spiral binding is a plus for use in the clinical area.
Assessment: This is an excellent tool for developing skill in dosage calculation. The presentation is clear and succinct. The illustrations of medication labels and delivery systems are current and appropriate. However, references are to other nursing textbooks, rather than to any periodical literature.
