Children's Literature

When Drew Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975, she was already famous. Her father, John Drew Barrymore was an actor, and her mother Jaid aspired to be one. Like many child actors, Drew's career started when she began working in commercials. Many of us remember her for the part she played in E.T., The Extra-terrestrial. However, today's reader will be made aware of the problems Drew has overcome to be the actress she is today. Her bouts with depression, drugs, and alcohol have been well publicized, but her ability to overcome these problems and continue with the work she loves will be an inspiration to young readers. An index, filmography and chronology are included. Illustrations are all in black-and-white, but this does not detract from the value of the book. This is a welcome addition to update those biography collections at upper elementary levels. 2001, Mitchell Lane Publishers, $15.95. Ages 10 to 14. Reviewer: Joyce Rice
