School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Adequate series entries that cover the history, politics and society, religion, art and literature, everyday life, and decline of two ancient civilizations. Well-organized chapters consist of several two-page spreads. Quotes from ancient sources and modern historians add insight and interest to the objective texts. The layouts are inviting; the typeface is large and easy to read; and clear full-color photographs, reproductions, and maps are in abundance. Captions convey considerable additional information. While Simon James's Ancient Rome and George Hart's Ancient Egypt (both Knopf, 1990) have even more illustrations, the amount of information presented is comparable. If titles on the subject are in demand, these books would be useful additions.-Peg Glisson, Mendon Center Elementary School, Pittsford, NYBook Details
