Children's Literature

People have lived in the country of Egypt for many thousands of years. Some Egyptians are nomads who travel across deserts for most of the year. As they move, they carry their tents and animals with them. In Egyptian cities, some people live above shops or in apartment buildings. In the countryside, Egyptians often live in mud-brick houses. Chapters covering geography, religion, festivals, education, language, and customs make this a worthy addition to the social studies classroom. A map is included that will help readers to locate Egypt. The photographs will give you the feeling of having been in the country itself. A glossary, pronunciation guide, index and recommending reading section are included. This is part of the series "A Ticket to."

Children's Literature - Karen Porter

This intermediate level nonfiction book is an ideal resource for any student interested in modern day Egypt. The book opens with a colorful map showing Egypt's major physical features, cities and neighbors. The text, photographs and illustrations offer a complete description of Egypt's land and people today as well as a look into her past. Specifically the author discusses the Egyptians' adaptations to their desert climate which include irrigation of the Nile valley and unique styles of clothing and architecture. No book about Egypt would be complete without reference to her rich history. This one covers the languages and traditions of the ancient past and relates them to the language and tourism of modern day Egypt. The photographs and drawings which appear on virtually every page make it easy for a child to visualize day to day tasks such as shopping, cooking, attending school, and the practice of religion. The contents, index and glossary pages make it easy to locate specific information and the further reading section directs the reader to additional resources.

Library Journal

Gr 1-3-This brightly illustrated and jauntily written introduction begins with a map that visually places Egypt in the context of its African and Arab neighbors. The two-page chapters introduce most aspects of daily life including country and city life, family, religion, festivals, and food. Throughout, the writing style is characterized by short exclamatory sentences such as, "It is a huge city!" and "Wow!" because "Some date palms grow to be a hundred feet high." An oasis is described as an area "where water supplies allow plants to grow," but there is no explanation of where the water comes from. A chapter on the pyramids (with a sidebar on mummies) provides a glimpse into Egypt's ancient history. The full-color photographs on every page are identical to those in Streissguth's Egypt (Carolrhoda, 1999) in the "Globe-trotters Club" series but with different captions. Not an essential purchase.-Frances E. Millhouser, Chantilly Regional Library, VA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
