Synopsis
Discusses the physical characteristics, feeding and mating behavior, interaction with humans, and habitat of dolphins.
Veronica Betancourt - Children's Literature
This book about dolphins is fairly uninspiring. Due to its wide scope, it fails to focus on the interesting details such as the bottlenoses that hunt by driving fish ashore in South Carolina or the ability of dolphins to fend off sharks. Instead, the book provides a cursory view of five different dolphin species and proceeds to document the generalities of their physical appearance and behavior. This book suffers from too large a range of information. Like its companions in the larger "Wild Animals!" series, this book contains chapters on the animal's physical characteristics, distinguishing traits, social life, eating habits, mating behavior, rearing of its young, and relationship to humankind. The books in the series also include a glossary, a reading list (which is of limited use to non-English speaking readers), and an index. 2002, Blackbirch Press/Gale Group, Ages 8 to 10.
