Children's Literature
Cole explains the workings of a cheetah's body and corresponding speed well in her contribution to the "Wild Cats of the World!" series. Her writing is engaging and clear, with a particularly good explanation of how cheetahs' once ranged across all of Africa and much of South Asia complete with an anecdote about Akbar's 1,000 pet cheetahs. Cole's describes the dangers that cheetah's face, such as having their prey stolen by lions while winded from the chase, as well as the less exciting characterizations of the animal's physical appearance. The book provides a good basic knowledge of cheetahs to the uninformed reader, as well as more unusual information to the cheetah connoisseur. Like its companions in the larger "Wild Animals!" series, this book contains chapters on the animal's physical characteristics, distinguishing traits, social life, eating habits, mating behavior, rearing of its young, and relationship to humankind. The books in the series also include a glossary, a reading list (which is of limited use to non-English speaking readers), and an index. 2002, Blackbirch Press/Gale Group, Ages 8 to 10.βVeronica Betancourt
