Gr 7 Up-These books will grab readers' attention as they open with a conflict or thought-provoking situation in the featured person's life. Norton begins with a politically charged event. In an unprecedented move, Norton and six of her colleagues marched to the Senate and demanded a hearing for Anita Hill's sexual harassment charges against Judge Clarence Thomas. The stage is then set for Norton's bold politics and dynamic leadership, from student activism during her teens to authoring the guidelines on workplace sexual harassment as head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Council. Morrison opens with an incident in West's childhood that propelled this professor of religion and African-American studies at Princeton to pursue a lifelong commitment to improving race relations. His views and inspiration were also drawn from strong family ties, religion, teachers, leaders, and even music-all of which are sufficiently explored. The format is open, and each chapter begins with a quote from the featured subject. Direct quotes are not attributed; brief bibliographies are included.-Ajoke' T. I.
