Library Journal

Chalk's (former professor, international relations, Univ. of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia; The Latin American Drug Trade: Scope, Dimensions, Impact, and Response) introduction to this two-volume encyclopedia provides an excellent conceptualization of terrorism based on specific traits common to terroristic actions. The entries address specific individuals, incidents, or groups; some include photos. Closing each entry is a list of books or articles for further reading and cross-references. Volume 2 contains an extensive bibliography and a categorical list of entries. A chronology highlighting the trends in terroristic activity would have been welcome. VERDICT Overall, this encyclopedia provides a wealth of information on terrorists, terrorist groups, and incidents. It would be useful to anyone researching information on such activities throughout the world in the 20th and 21st centuries. A solid addition to reference collections.—Diane Fulkerson, Univ. of South Florida Polytechnic, Lakeland
