Description: This book reviews several aspects of the basic sciences as related to the musculoskeletal system.
Purpose: The purpose is to help the orthopedic trainee prepare in part for the FRCS (Ortho) exam in the U.K. However, in addition to this audience, the material can be of great benefit to orthopedic residents in the U.S.
Audience: Although some of the contributors may be household names within the orthopedic community in England, the overseas reader may have insufficient information about their academic qualifications.
Features: Chapters deal with important topics such as the biology of bone, cartilage, muscle, and nerve. The biomechanics of the hip and knee are also covered in this work. The chapter on clean air theatres, etc., may be too thorough for the registrar, and the one dealing with skin flaps is better suited for a clinical review. The vital topic of biomaterials is not covered in this edition.
Assessment: As a former temporary senior registrar, I fully appreciated the need for such a work that can help the ortho registrar to be more focused on the musculoskeletal system. The editor and his contributors are to be congratulated on a job well done. I highly recommend this reasonably priced book for all orthopedic trainees and medical libraries.
