Edward M. Heath
This is a second edition of an undergraduate exercise physiology text previously published in 1994. The authors have made substantial changes from the first edition and go to great lengths to include practical information and to present material in a style that holds the reader's interest. This book is designed for a one-semester undergraduate exercise physiology course with an emphasis on practical information in a non-research-oriented format. It is predominantly targeted at undergraduate students in exercise science but will also be an excellent resource for individuals working in all aspects of the exercise and wellness field. All three authors have been true leaders in the field for several decades. All the basic areas in exercise physiology are covered, and the authors have done a great job tying in nutritional aspects as well as aerobic, anaerobic, and resistance training. The colorful figures and tables are excellent and are a great help to students. Although the authors purposefully use a non-research format, it would be helpful to have some more of the material cited within the chapters. A chapter on pediatric issues would also serve many students. This is an excellent undergraduate text that is a standard in the field. There is not a better exercise physiology text for practical information on training and the nutritional aspects of exercise.
