Overview

This resource covers the essentials of mechanical ventilation of respiratory care patients. It comprehensively covers all aspects of ventilation management and teaches clinical decision-making based on the patient’s disease. Revised and updated, the new Second Edition features new chapters on: non-invasive positive pressure ventilation for acute respiratory failure, home mechanical ventilation, high-frequency ventilation, prone-positioning, nitric oxide and helium usage, partial liquid and TGI.

Synopsis

Written by outstanding authorities, Essentials of Mechanical Ventilation puts the focus on the effective delivery of therapy to patients. After thoroughly introducing mechanical principles, this text explains the use of mechanical ventilation in the clinical management of patients suffering from more than a dozen different types of respiratory problems.

This first edition book provides comprehensive coverage of mechanical ventilation and ventilator concepts divided into four parts: Principles, Management, Monitoring, and Related Topics. The book has a list of several points to remember and a bibliography at the end of each of the 36 chapters. It is written as a practical guide to mechanical ventilation in general and not to specific equipment. There may be a few other books on this topic, but none as concise and current as this one. The authors have accomplished what they intended to do. According to the authors, this book is written for all clinicians who care for adult patients on mechanical ventilation. This book would be useful for advanced respiratory care students, medical residents and interns. Hess and Kacmarek have many publications on the subject of respiratory care. As stated in the preface, the authors have over 50 years' combined experience as authors and clinicians. The graphs and diagrams are well placed to illustrate important concepts in the book. The references are very current and related to the discussion in the text. The index and table of contents are helpful. The format of the hardcover book is that of a typical health care text. This is an outstanding book on the topic of adult mechanical ventilation. The authors have tied together all of the current concepts and background information for the clinician preparing to care for the patient on ventilatory support. I would recommend this book for any bookstore or library that services healthcare students. Critical care nurses, respiratory care practitioners, and physicians will all benefit by reading this book.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Alexander B. Adams, RRT(Regions Hospital)
Description: This is the second edition of an authoritative review for students and clinicians requiring rationale and basic guidelines for ventilatory care. The previous edition was published in 1996. The new edition can be justified by the introduction of new ventilator modes, changes in the venue of care delivery, and clinical studies verifying the benefits of a lung protective ventilator strategy.
Purpose: This book is about mechanical ventilation care, not ventilators. It is organized to cover principles of care, management of a range of conditions requiring mechanical ventilation, monitoring techniques, and special topics. Since respiratory therapists are often strong on the technical aspects of ventilators and weak on the principles of care, the objectives of are worthy. The objectives are met with this book.
Audience: This book is for clinicians caring for ventilated patients. Both authors are known authorities in ventilator management. While the target audience would be, primarily, respiratory care and nursing personnel, physicians directing ventilator care would benefit from sections of this book.
Features: Basic principles are covered without extensive detailing or referencing. Recommendations on the management of specific disease conditions are uniquely presented. The monitoring of ventilated patients is adequately addressed while the special topics section covers areas that often require several sources. Although the book is unreferenced and opinionated, the opinions are based on decades of experience.
Assessment: This book has no direct comparison since it provides direct instruction on the management of ventilated patients. It lacks the depth of Tobin's comprehensive review books on mechanical ventilation and monitoring. The technical aspects of ventilators are covered elsewhere. As a useful reference or a unique, basic instruction text, this book is quite good. The second edition is justified by rapid changes in the field of ventilator care.
