Overview
The field of non-invasive ventilation continues to expand rapidly since publication of the second edition of Non-Invasive Respiratory Support, new controversies have arisen and numerous practical guidelines have been issued. This expanded third edition with new international contributors has been fully revised and updated. It builds on the success of the highly-regarded previous editions, detailing the role of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in acute and chronic ventilatory failure, and the outcome of the intervention across a wide range of respiratory disorders in adults and children.
The book provides clear, step-by-step, evidence-based guidance on the practicalities of all the principal techniques, and advice is offered on indications for NIV, how to choose equipment, when to initiate therapy, and when to discontinue therapy.
From a highly respected international author team, this book provides invaluable guidance to respiratory physicians, intensivists, anaesthetists, nurses, physiotherapists and medical technicians working in this area.

Description:This is a comprehensive and up-to-date resource on the rational application of various modalities of noninvasive mechanical ventilation. It addresses the history, indications, evolution, and current devices available for use in both pediatric and adult support, indications, limitations, and complications. There is ample attention given to perturbations in algorithms and their solutions -- namely, dealing with events that "do not go by the textbook." Particularly impressive are the discussions of monitoring, which in day-to-day, clinical practice is often poorly addressed and managed, clarification of indications for withdrawal of such support, and perhaps most significantly, ethical decisions and the legal basis often underlying them; for as with many new "life-saving" medical innovations, noninvasive ventilatory support has now evolved into a "life-sustaining" intervention, often inappropriately left in place when ethically disputable.
Purpose:In aggregate, a comprehensive attempt is made to incorporate the observations of 12 authorities with diverse, worldwide experience, to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date reference for investigators and practitioners of an "old concept," but "newly innovative" science and practical application.
Audience:The handling of basic science and clinical application of noninvasive respiratory support is done in such a manner that anyone already engaged in applications involving invasive ventilatory support medicine, whether in research and development, laboratory or clinical investigation, or clinical practice of primary care, neurology, allergy, or pulmonology, will find the book an informative read or selective reference.
Features:The book focuses primarily on outlining the supportive science, clinical investigation, and personal practice experience of 12 experts to guide the rational application of noninvasive respiratory support. A primary criticism is the paucity of applicable pictures and illustrations of noninvasive system structure/function and those placed in service.
Assessment:The book achieves its intended goals well.
