In the past three decades, bioethics has become increasingly important in the practice of medicine and has become a field of study in itself. Legal issues in medicine have also risen in importance in recent years. Most books written about bioethics for the clinician are written for doctors and nurses and there has been a dearth of texts aimed at ancillary medical professionals such as medical imaging personnel. Bettye Wilson, Associate Professor of Radiologic Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and her co-authors have filled the gap with this book. The book is a concise review of ethics and basic law for the medical imaging professional. It is aimed at radiologic technologists, diagnostic medical sonographers, and nuclear medical technologists. The book reviews basic theories of ethics, provides guides for developing personal ethics and techniques for ethical problem solving, and reviews administrative ethics. The book also reviews the basics of informed consent and other areas of medical law, including charting and documentation. There are also chapters devoted to the ethical and legal issues of dealing with the chemically dependent colleague, and to the ethical and legal issues concerning children, the elderly, HIV-infected patients, patients with disability, and terminal patients. A chapter is devoted to the codes of ethics issued by the medical imaging professional societies. The book covers a broad array of ethical issues succinctly, and is a good overview for the medical imaging professional who wishes to become familiar with the ethical problems and legal issues in their field. Its ethics sections would have been more useful if there were more casediscussions of the various ethical dilemmas facing medical imaging professionals. Nonetheless, it is an important contribution and will be a valuable resource for medical imaging professionals.
