Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman

The feeling of happiness is described in this book along with three examples of children being happy. The stories are told through illustrations and two or three simple sentences per page. Ellie feels happy when her lost dog comes home. She feels happy when she visits Grandma and Grandpa. Holly feels happy making invitations, helping with a costume, helping decorate the cake, and having a birthday party. Joe is happy during a day at the beach. Happiness is shared by smiling at people and helping others. The glossary defines decorate in the following way: "when you decorate something, you add things to it to make it look nice." An index is included. Notes for parents and teachers give page-by-page ideas for discussion such as: "Read the first line on page 4: β€˜People have lots of different feelings.' Help your children to make a list of different feelings." The colored cartoon-like pictures show various emotions by the faces and postures of children in their usual environments. This is a wonderful book to facilitate discussion on the subject of feelings between adults and children. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
