Children's Literature
Every parent's dream, this book provides eighteen simple science fair projects for use by eight-to-eleven-year olds as they enhance their understanding of scientific principles in the world around them. The introduction to the text makes specific recommendations for approaching the various projects—with the important reminder of the necessity of adult supervision liberally sprinkled throughout—and then provides sensible suggestions concerning safety issues. Another helpful part of the introduction specifies how to present the information disseminated through the various projects; data displays and tabletop displays with reports get a reasonable examination by the article. The author then provides the steps about how to do each experiment and what the expected result should be; background information and a secondary experiment are offered with each main project as set-aside boxes. Basic black-and-white pictures are provided to further illustrate some aspects of the projects. This book certainly provides a fundamental service, and for that reason, it is a definite must for all school libraries. 2006, Chelsea Clubhouse, Ages 8 to 11.—Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
