School Library Journal

Gr 5-9-The author opens with a brief description of how the eye works, illustrated by a simple black-and-white drawing. Explanations of 20/20 vision and of the roles of the optician, optometrist, and ophthalmologist are set off in boxes. One chapter offers short descriptions of eye diseases as well as other medical conditions that eye problems might indicate. Laser surgery is mentioned as a way to treat certain diseases, but not as the current procedure for other disorders, where only the term "surgery" is used. Stanley advises readers about wearing safety glasses, but does not address the use of strong-enough sunglasses. At times she creates scenarios to introduce a problem, but they don't seem believable. Black-and-white and full-color photographs appear throughout; some are grainy. The words in the glossary are not clearly defined. Readers will need to look elsewhere for complete information about vision problems.-Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
