Overview

Designed for undergraduate course work, this exercise physiology textbook unites research and theory with real-world application so students can easily relate to the concepts being presented. The unique applied approach fully engages you in discovering how the human body works and responds to exercise. You’ll not only gain a solid foundation in exercise physiology concepts, you’ll also learn how to apply these concepts on the job to optimize athletic performance and well-being.  Moreover, you’ll come to understand the vital health benefits of exercise and physical activity for all individuals at all ages, including special populations.  Beginning with basic exercise physiology concepts, the text progressively builds your knowledge by integrating these concepts into practical discussions of nutrition and training. The text stresses a research-based approach, enabling you to locate and evaluate the evidence you need to make good decisions.  Numerous examples further underscore the importance of basic concepts and research in addressing real-life challenges in exercise and athletic training.

From The Critics

Reviewer: Erik H VanIterson, M.S., M.Bio(University of Minnesota School of Kinesiology)
Description: This undergraduate level book introduces and applies the key concepts of exercise physiology, using numerous figures and diagrams to demonstrate the mechanisms and processes that occur in the human body during the course of exercise training.
Purpose: The aim is to introduce the basic fundamental principles of exercise physiology. The book explains the physiological processes that occur during exercise training and how different variables may affect performance. It expands upon these key concepts, using real life examples and primary research to demonstrate how these principles may be applied in practice.
Audience: The primary audience is undergraduate students, and the book is organized to allow an instructor to plan a lecture series based upon the order of the chapters. However, it also may be appropriate for other professions in the exercise sciences, such as physical therapists, coaches, trainers, and fitness enthusiasts.
Features: The book sufficiently describes the key principles found in many exercise physiology textbooks, but the book excels in the figures, diagrams, and tables that demonstrate physiological processes occurring before, during, and after exercise training.
Assessment: This is an excellent contribution to the field of exercise physiology. It provides accurate and current information well supported by peer-reviewed literature. The systematic presentation is well thought out, resulting in an accessible textbook that can be read start to finish or one topic at a time.
