Overview

FROM THE BLOG OF CAM WALKER

My friends and I call ourselves the Outriders. It's not like a club of anything, we just all hate the idea of ever being BORED, and when we set our minds on something, we don't ask anyone's permission, we just DO IT.

There's this place called Blue Cave, which glows blue ONCE EVERY SEVEN YEARS (phosphorescent plankton!). So obviously, we had to get there. But first we had to do three HUGE things:

1 ENACT THE "FREE SHELBY" PLAN

2 "SCAVENGE" (NOT STEAL, THERE'S A DIFFERENCE) THE GEAR WE NEED TO CROSS TWELVE MILES OF OPEN OCEAN

3 BE HOME BY 7:00 P.M.

My plan wasn't great, since it relied on a lot of luck. But everything worked perfectly -- except that Shelby's sister got kidnapped.

But that's a longer story.

Editorials

From Barnes & Noble

Ed Decter is the acclaimed writer/director/producer who penned There's Something About Mary, The Lizzie McGuire Story, and The Santa Clause 2. But even in the midst of that fame, he still looks back with yearning to those long-gone days when he could roam free and fearless on his trusty Schwinn bike. His middle-grade mystery/adventure series, Outriders, is set in the present but evokes those lost days of freewheeling adventure.

Children's Literature - Alison King

Cam Walker appears with his crew in another "Outriders" adventure. The plan is to see phosphorescent plankton up close and personal at the Blue Cave. As this only happens once every seven years, it is really important to get to see it now before they are too old to enjoy it as adults. Cam is an idiot savant planner of adventures that are a) off the wall, b) seriously exciting, and c) excellent opportunities for scavenging, which is not quite stealing unless things go wrong, which they doβ€”often. The plan to get to the Blue Cave becomes entwined with the greater goal of saving his friend Shelby from the horrors of summer school. Things become even more complicated when Shelby's sister, Annabel, gets kidnapped by two muscle buffs who have stolen a precious item which was recovered by the Outriders but then stolen by them on the same day because they need it to get Annabel back. Are you lost? Do not worry. What should be a confusing tale is managed solidly by the author who keeps tight control on the plot so all the reader has to do is hang on and enjoy the ride. The camaraderie among the group comes across as heartfelt without being sentimental. The different characters are nicely described so the reader gets a clear image of each one, and develops simpatico as well, even with the huge mastiff, Howie. Cam is anyone's idea of an annoying, goofy, and yet really likeable younger brother. This book is a fun read and could be used to emphasize the stresses children and teens face at school as outlined by what happens to Shelby in this book.
