School Library Journal
Gr 8-12-A collection of experiments and activities designed to illustrate basic properties of water. Most of the projects utilize readily available equipment and supplies. Directions are clearly presented, and diagrams aid in the construction of apparatus where needed. Safety rules are presented in the introduction; the need for adult supervision and additional precautions appear in bold print. In presenting each of the 36 investigations, Gardner asks questions that focus readers' attention on specific outcomes and suggests further research. In addition, 21 ``puzzlers'' are scattered throughout the chapters with answers given at the back of the book. This is definitely a hands-on science book, and not one in which directions are followed by descriptions of results that make it unnecessary to do the experiments. Students and teachers looking for challenging activities involving water will find this volume most useful; they will also find ideas for interesting science projects.-Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA
