This British import is a fairly concise and illuminating overview of Japanese history. The text is intelligent, and particularly good on the perid prior to Japan's opening to the West. Sidebars about Europeans who influenced this period such as the missionary Jesuits and the English samurai, William Adams, are fascinating, and help to illustrate the vast divergence in thought patterns between East and West. The maps and illustrations are handsome and pertinent.Book Details
