Overview

Explore the far edges of what's possible with the "new origami." You don't have to know the mathematics and geometry on which the designs are based in order to create your most spectacular projects ever, originated by the world's pioneers of the art. The objects are fantastic, but the folding techniques use simple triangles and squares, pyramids and cubes. Soon, you'll master a variety of spiral designs, many-pointed stars, 9-sided gift boxes, and 12-sided gyroscopic whirligigs. More elaborate designs, which merely repeat basic techniques, invite you into the outer-space world with star beams and 8-sided flying saucers, as well as more down-to-earth whimsical crows in the grass, gorgeous nested boxes, and sculptured gift containers. Other experiments involve the ancient Pythagorean golden rectangle and super tangrams based on Chinese puzzle shapes which you recombine into swans, ducks, butterflies, and running children. It's just a matter of learning the angles!

Move beyond the boundaries of traditional origami and cross new dimensions of creativity. These innovations to a classic craft are so extensive they could be called revolutionary! You'll use new materials, forms, and folding and design techniques. That's what makes this type of origami extreme and exciting. But what you'll find most satisfying about it are the projects you'll create, whether you're breaking symmetry to fashion a cat family or producing super pinwheel-cube modules.

Children's Literature

Traditional origami has many bounds and limits. What can be created by breaking those bounds? For example, what would happen if you started with a round piece of paper rather than a square one? What if you cut the paper, or glued it? This opens up a new world of possibilities. This book will show the reader how to create pieces by weaving, folding, and even cutting and gluing pieces together. You can create things such as a soccer ball, a star, dragonflies, boxes and various other shapes and designs. These are beautiful when they are complete, but they are not beginning origami tasks. The instructions are complicated (because the designs are complicated), but they are explained well with diagrams, words, and photographs. This book also includes much of the history of origami, including some Japanese characters. This book could be useful in a high school art class, or even in a math class to teach about geometry and shapes. 2002, Sterling Publishing Co, Ages 10 to 18.
