In the pantheon of sports, field hockey does not stand out as one that the vast majority of fans would be familiar with. Yet, once you take a closer look at this sport your realize that it combines aspects of several other competitions that come together to make up a team game that is popular enough to make it an Olympic event. Field hockey, as readers of this illustrated volume by Veronica Lee will discover, is a tough and gritty sport. Elements of field hockey are similar to its more commonly understood cousin, ice hockey. Goals are scored, saves are made, and the combination of individual skill with team concepts make the competition keen. However, since field hockey is not such a familiar sport readers with either an interest in learning more about it or trying it out would do well to peruse this little book. Within the pages of Ms. Lee's study of field hockey are contained elements that touch upon the history, equipment, and preparation necessary to excel in this venue. As part of the "Sports Injuries" series, Field Hockey is designed to afford participants in this sport and their coaches with insights into how best to prepare for a safe participation in the sport. As such, Field Hockey is a useful tool in the repertoire of a potential participant or fan of this relatively obscure but competitive sport. 2004, Mason Crest Publishers, Ages 9 to 12.βGreg M.
