The instructions to look closely and then answer a specific question about the clear color photograph, immediately draws the reader into the book. The first photograph shows the insect in its natural habitat. The next photo shows only the insect. The third photograph is the same as the first but has replaced the insect with white space to make it clear where it was located. The moth that looks like a leaf and the inchworm that looks like a twig are quite well hidden. The ladybug and the grasshopper are easier to see. The "Hide and seek" series uses short, simple sentences, and controlled vocabulary to introduce these four insects. The wonders of nature and insect camouflage will intrigue newly independent readers. There is a vocabulary section at the back of the book that includes a pronunciation guide and a written definition. "To Find Out More" includes the titles of two other books to read and provides two web sites for further information. There is an index as well, and the total number of pages, including the index, is twenty-four. 2000, Rosen Book Works/Children's Press, Ages 5 to 8.βSharon Salluzzo
