School Library Journal

Gr 1-3 Among the several offerings for young readers on the subject, Fire Fighters A to Z is different because it is an alphabet book. The easy format, with simple, brief text and large black-and-white photographs, is certain to appeal. However, some of the photographs are disappointing, as they tend to be dark, and the shots lack drama. While some of the entries are less obvious ( X: Xavier, a Dalmatian mascot), all are informative, and the spectrum of fire fighting, from equipment ( B: Boots) to job functions ( E: Emergency) , is nicely covered. Additional text and pictures follow the alphabet section for use by teachers. This section makes the book perhaps more suitable for school libraries, although the alphabet format will appeal to lots of young browsers.Connie Tyrrell Burns, Morrisson-Reeves Library, Richmond, Ind.
