It appears as though the good folks at Scholastic have found a hidden niche in the area of book publishing and we should all be thankful that they did. This "Word by Word First Reader" is wonderful. Its story is told in its entirety through one-word sentences. Understandably, the pictures tell a lot more than the words and are a perfect accompaniment to the text, in bright firehouse colors. This book is ideal for children just learning to read, as they can visually grasp the large letters and take picture cues for the words. What a refreshing change from the books that assume the 3-to-5-year-old set understands three word sentences at the commencement of their reading journey! An alphabetical word list is found at the end, along with a page called Fluency Fun, which contains games and a note to parents (that these "games" are really speed and sight recognition drills). Part of the "Scholastic Reader" series that ranges from Level 1 to Level 4, the books start with short sentences and stories children can sound out and remember, and progress to chapter books with far fewer pictures. Highly recommended. 2003, Cartwheel Books/Scholastic Inc, Ages 3 to 5.
