Description: This is a biographical examination of the life of Florence Nightingale. The narrative is complemented by lovely photographs and artwork, and the printed calligraphy adds interest as well.
Purpose: The purpose is to present Nightingale's life, work, and ideas to offset the meager, trivialized picture most nurses have of her. These are very worthy objectives and well met.
Audience: The book is written for all nurses — students and practitioners — but nurses interested in the history of nursing and theory will be particularly pleased by the presentation.
Features: Nightingale's life is examined by highlighting her major milestones and historical periods. The breadth of coverage encompasses the early years, the Crimean War years, post-war years, reform years, and later years. The color art and old photographs add immensely to the visual enjoyment of the book. Appendixes include a reference list of many of Nightingale's writings.
Assessment: This is an outstanding review and analysis of Nightingale's life, meticulously referenced. The presentation, including very interesting narrative, color art, and old black-and-white photographs, is superb. It is fascinating to read and lovely to look at and would make an exceptional addition to a nursing or personal library. This is a one-of-a-kind, artistic history of the life of a nursing icon.
