Reviewer:Martha J. Greenberg, PhD, RN(Pace University)
Description:This pocket guide, a companion to the main text, Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice (Jones & Bartlett, 2005), presents selected and condensed information of the core knowledge for certification in holistic nursing from the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) certification program and objectives.
Purpose:The book provides nurses with a handy reference for use in holistic nursing. While it helps nurses to explore healing in relationship to self and others, it emphasizes the nurse's role as instrument of healing and use of caring-healing strategies. This book is a helpful and necessary adjunct to lengthier texts.
Audience:This pocket guide is written for nursing students, educators, clinicians, and researchers interested in holism, healing, and spirituality in nursing. The authors are eminent in the field of holistic nursing and integrated therapies.
Features:This book presents some of the core information of holistic nursing organized around five values of the AHNA holistic certification curriculum. Included in abbreviated form is information on philosophy, theory, ethics, education, research, communication, cultural diversity, and caring in holistic nursing. Each section presents an overview of the most important points of the concept synthesized from the larger text. The book uses the same format as the main text to deliver content, such as definitions of terms, brief content, self reflections, and resources relating to organizations, citations, or web sites.
Assessment:This is an extremely useful book that does not replace the larger book, but provides a comprehensive tool for quick reference.
