Reviewer:Allan John Paul, DVM, MS(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description:This is an update of a book on the common parasites of laboratory animals. The first edition was published in 1973.
Purpose:The purpose is to gather information known in the field of lab animal parasites into a single text. This is definitely a worthy objective since information in this field is widely scattered or hard to find.
Audience:This book targets a wide audience -- anyone dealing with lab animals will find it useful. The author has put together an excellent group of contributors.
Features:The major parasites of the commonly used laboratory animals are covered. The organization of the book outlining the morphology, hosts, life cycle, pathology, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and public health considerations of each parasite makes it easy to follow. The appendix covering drugs is exceptional and will be very useful.
Assessment:This is a well written and very useful book for those in the field of lab animal medicine. This second edition contains much newer useful information.

βWait no more! After 35 years, the second edition of Flynn's Parasites of Laboratory Animals has finally arrived.... If you are looking for a well organized reference on parasites found in the research environment, then look no further. This is the most comprehensive, detailed, easy to use compilation available on the market. To collect the equivalent breadth, one would have to purchase many species-specific texts.... A detailed reference to be used to confirm preliminary results and enhance understanding of the impact of discovered infections. The articles are well written in an easy to read, direct, and succinct style... I recommend this text as a practical, user friendly yet extremely comprehensive reference book.β Interface: Newsletter of the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Medicine"The similarity of organization of each host chapter makes it easy to develop a method to use this large text. The tables at the end of each host chapter present information based on the host organ system and help direct the reader to more detailed references for each parasite. The text was carefully edited to maintain the same style throughout the book by different contributors.... Although this is not a book to use as a quick guide or a clinical differential, it is a good investment as a comprehensive reference text if: 1) you have an interest in parasitology, especially of laboratory animal species; 2) you are dealing with a commercial operation, such as a producer or distributor of any of these species; 3) you are a practitioner who sees these species on a fairly regular basis as pets."
