Overview

Pathogens whose life cycle requires multiple hosts have been eliminated from laboratory research animals because of the artificial housing system and commercial food; those that cause observable sickness in their host have been culled over the decades along with the diseased hosts. So, the only pathogens that survive among laboratory animals are those that travel directly from host to host and do not make the animal sick: a great triumph, right? Not so, says Baker (laboratory animal medicine, Louisiana State U.-Baton Rouge). He explains how unseen pathogens can and do alter host physiology, and thereby compromise research findings. After discussing general considerations, he catalogues known pathogens for all the major laboratory species, and describes diagnostic and control procedures.
