Overview

The forensic pathologist is a medical detective who investigates deaths that may be sudden, unexpected, unexplained, or violent. Using scene investigation and autopsy procedures, the forensic pathologist must answer the following four questions: 1. Who died (a question of identity)? 2. How and why did the death occur (a question of the cause of death)? 3. What were the circumstances that brought about the death (a question as to the manner of death)? 4. When did the death occur (a question of the time of death)?

This book is intended as an introduction to forensic medicine, which is also known as forensic pathology. Many of the medical terms used in this specialty are defined and basic physiologic processes are explained. Although basic in its presentation, many controversial issues are explored.

VOYA

Teachers continually look for a hook to entice students to learn science, and these books from the oInside Forensic Scienceo series may well fulfill that goal. Crime programs on television create interest in many students who may otherwise be disengaged from science. Forensic Medicine explores the role of forensic pathology in crime investigation by answering the time of death and cause of death. A pathologist performs an autopsy using prescribed procedures. Scenarios include specific types of violent deaths and determination of natural causes. The book also provides career information and integrates social science and science technology. Definitions within the text, many illustrations, and lively narrative will encourage students who might be unwilling to tackle more difficult text. These books should have broad appeal and be welcomed by teachers and students. This series also includes volumes on poisons, pharmacology, DNA analysis, and legal aspects of forensic science.

Children's Literature - Pat Sherman

The question "Who done it?" has inspired many careers, not just in the realm of mystery writing but in the world of science as well. More and more these days, the who, what, where, why, and how of death is being answered in high-tech laboratories by forensic pathologists and their assistants. From major court cases to television dramas, forensic medicine is very much in the headlines. Pathologists have gone from working quietly behind the scenes to star status. None of this, of course, can escape media savvy teens, who are often riveted by the process of unraveling mysteries. Chelsea House has decided to capitalize on this growing fascination with a new six book series, "Inside Forensic Science," covering anthropology, DNA analysis, medicine, pharmacology, law, and poison. Howard Adelman's Forensic Medicine explains the physicians role in the forensic process. It is definitely not for the fainthearted. There is one picture of a decomposing skeleton and another of a dismembered hand which testify to the more grisly aspects of autopsy. Overall, however, the tone is refreshingly non-sensational. Adelman takes the reader through the details of the forensic pathologist's daily work, showing how evidence is collected and what it contributes to the larger investigation in determining the cause of death. The use of bold type to highlight professional terms is particularly useful, as is the extensive glossary at the end. This book would be a good supplement to both science and social studies units. Some prior knowledge of medicine and biology would be valuable, but all fans of mysteries should find something of interest here.
