Overview

FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING, 3E provides updated and comprehensive information necessary to successfully complete a practical or vocational nursing curriculum, including basic nursing, adult health nursing and material and pediatric nursing. This book is an excellent introduction to the field of nursing and covers the health care system, communication, nursing processes, and client teaching, as well as current topics such as HIPAA and bioterrorism. The section on adult health nursing follows the Nursing Process format, while the clinical chapters include Nursing Management sections for each disorder, emphasizing the nurse's role in providing competent client care. In addition, Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) and Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) have been identified in each Nursing Care Plan. Each chapter contains a Case Study with critical thinking questions designed to assist the reader through the nursing process and to develop a customized plan of care for the client in the scenario. Purpose:The purpose is to present introductory content to beginning students in a program preparing registered nurses. This is a very worthy objective that the author has met.
Audience:The intended audience includes nursing students and educators who teach the fundamentals of nursing. The author is a credible authority.
Features:The introductory material includes such topics as the healthcare system, communication, nursing processes, and client teaching. Current topics such as HIPAA, West Nile virus, SARS and bioterrorism are covered. The adult health nursing section follows the standard nursing process. The clinical chapters have been revised to include nursing management sections for each disorder. Nursing outcomes classification (NOC) and nursing interventions classification (NIC) gave been identified in each nursing care plan. A case study is included in selected chapters and uses critical thinking questions to assist the user through the nursing process and to develop a customized plan of care for the client in the scenario. The new maternal and pediatric section covers topics such as prenatal care complications of pregnancy, birth, postpartum care, and newborn care. Then all equipment needed is listed followed by a link to the nursing process to outline all details of the procedure. Photographs and illustrations support the presentation. The quality of the presentation is high.

About the Author, Lois White

Lois Elain Wacker White earned a diploma in nursing from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Springfield, Illinois; an Associate degree in Science from Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, Texas; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas A & I University?Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi, Texas; a Master of Science in Education from Corpus Christi State University, Corpus Christi, Texas; and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in education administration?community college from the University of Texas, Austin, Texas. She has taught at Del Mar college, Corpus Christi, Texas, in both the Associate Degree Nursing program and the Vocational Nursing program. For 14 years she was also chairperson of the Department of Vocational Nurse Education. Dr. White has taught fundamentals of nursing, mental health/mental illness, medical-surgical nursing, and maternal/newborn nursing. Her professional career has also included 15 years of clinical practice. Dr. White has served on the Nursing Education Advisory Committee of the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas and the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners, which developed competencies expected of graduates for each level of nursing. She maintains membership in the Texas Association of Vocational Nurse Educators, Sigma Theta Tau, American Nurses Association, and the National League for Nursing.

Working as an RN for 36 years in the clinical and educational arenas has equipped Gena with a wide range of nursing experiences and varied skills to meet the educational needs of today's students. She has an MSEd and MSN. During her professional career, Gena served as a staff nurse, an assistance head nurse of a medical-surgical unit, a continuing education instructor, an associate professor in an LPN program, and director of an Associate Degree nursing program. She has taught LPN, ADN, BSN, and MSN nursing students. As a faculty member she taught many nursing courses and served on a statewide curriculum committee for a state college. As director of an Associate Degree nursing program, she was instrumental in starting and obtaining state board approval of an LPN-RN nursing program. Her master's research thesis was entitled, An Investigation of Learning Styles of Practical and Baccalaureate Students. The results of the study are published in the Journal of Nursing Education. She has co-authored two textbooks, a medical-surgical textbook and a transitions text for LPN to RN students. She has been an active member of Sigma Theta Tau.

Wendy Baumle is currently a nursing instructor at James A. Rhodes State College in Ohio. She has spent 19 years as a clinician, educator, school district health coordinator, and academician. Ms. Baumle has taught fundamentals of nursing, medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, obstetrics, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, and ethics in healthcare in practical nursing and associate nursing degree programs. She has previously taught at Lutheran College, Fort Wayne, Indiana, at Northwest State Community College, Archbold, Ohio, and at James. A. Rhodes State College, in Lima, Ohio. Wendy Baumle earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from The University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio and her Master's Degree in Nursing from The Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, Ohio. Ms. Baumle is a member of a number of professional nursing organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau, the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, and the Ohio Nurses Association. Her professional career has prepared her with the necessary knowledge and skills to be an effective lecturer and author.
