People with arthritis (and other diseases) have little to lose and perhaps much to gain by trying the simple remedies suggested by holistic health practitioners Welsh and Leonardo in this sixth, expanded edition of their book. Welsh states that his wife and others were cured by using simple (basically vegetarian) food recipes and by the use of enemas, colemics, and colonics. The authors recommend starting with a mono diet and gradually adding other foods to discover which foods may be causing the arthritic pain. They outline a basic diet with many recipes and instructions on healthful preparation of foods. While there are many excellent recipes, some use sweet and sour cream (high in fat) and large numbers of eggs (high in cholesterol). White sugar, white flour, and salt are listed as the ``three bad whites''--rightly so, but the honey and maple syrup alternative for sugar could be a problem for some people. One recipe uses raw egg yolk, which is not recommended by most scientists owing to the cancer virus in uncooked eggs. Given these flaws, this book is an optional purchase.-- Loraine F.
