From The Critics

Reviewer: Bernard J. Turnock, MD, MPH(University of Illinois at Chicago)
Description: This is a career planning resource for physicians-in-training and those contemplating a change in their careers. It is by no means a how-to manual; it is a comprehensive compilation and description of information that all too often is not encountered in traditional medical education and training programs.
Purpose: This second edition updates and expands the topics covered in the earlier edition.
Audience: Although primarily written for medical students and physicians in medical residency training programs, this book is also quite useful for older physicians who may be considering a change in their future practice location or duties. The author and contributors address a broad spectrum of issues that help inform those decisions ranging from the informational (e.g., the emerging roles for physician executives) to some that are quite controversial (e.g., physician unions).
Features: The features of the book are basic and adequate. There is little need for extensive illustrations and few are provided. The contributors have provided excellent, current, and comprehensive references, and the index is adequate. The book's appearance is plain.
Assessment: This book is must reading for would be and current physicians facing increasingly difficult career planning decisions, often with little help from their education and training programs. Its value in helping current physicians cope with recent and future changes in the health care system should not be overlooked as well.

Booknews

This second revised edition examines the current economic and market trends facing young doctors coming out of medical school--namely, a physician surplus. With popular sentiments regarding socialized medicine, medical expenses, and the changing authority of doctors, the author tries to map the terrain young physicians will find themselves in and help them navigate.
