Overview

Teaching children that the battle against the world’s overwhelming waste problem begins with them, this plethora of projects investigates the science of “garbology.” The guide highlights the choices people make in creating garbage in the first place, suggesting ways kids can reduce, reuse, and recycle as well as rethink their actions for the future. Along the way, hands-on activities encourage children to make even more discoveries. Kitchen lovers can whip up a delicious edible landfill, brew natural dyes for a T-shirt, and grow a windowsill garden to make herbal shampoo. Learning the ins and outs of biodegradation, kids can snag air pollution in a can or even compare the effects of commercial and homemade cleaners. From reusing jeans and plastic milk jugs to making use of the odds and ends in the junk drawer, this challenging collection of activities ensures each kid can become a “rubbish warrior.”

Synopsis

That potato chip bag you tossed in your trash can this afternoon-where does it go when it leaves your house? Garbage: Follow the Path of Your Trash with Science Activities for Kids invites middle graders to investigate the world of trash! The average American produces more than four pounds of trash every day-multiply that by 300 million people and you've got a lot of garbage! Where does it go? How does it break down? What are the challenges of dealing with so much waste? What can we do decrease the amount of stuff we are throwing away? Garbage explores questions like these while encouraging kids to think about the choices they make that generate garbage in the first place. In this book, kids discover the science of garbology, the fascinating world of midden excavation, and learn about different rubbish warriors who are determined to save the planet from being overrun with trash. Readers learn ways to reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink their actions by diving into critical-thinking activities designed to get kids looking at trash as a situation in need of a solution. While we all appreciate our garbage to be out of sight and out of mind, it's crucial to recognize the impact that human behavior has on the planet. Garbage includes hands-on STEM activities and critical thinking exercises to encourage readers to figure out ways to be part of the rubbish revolution. Fun facts, links to online primary sources and other supplemental material, and essential questions take readers on an exploration of the path of trash! Garbage is part of a set of four Build It Environmental Science books that explore the history and science of the planet and all that live on it through hands-on STEM activities and real-life environmental connections. Other titles in this series are Biodiversity, Planet Earth, and Biomes. Nomad Press books integrate content with participation. Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger

One of thirty-one in the "Build It Yourself" series, this edition focuses on informing elementary students of the impact that garbage is making on our world and provides directions on twenty-five short projects students can use to "reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink" trash. A brief, informative introduction alerts readers to the impact that trash is making on our world. Going beyond just being litter conscious, the book informs students about the amount of garbage we generate, the valuable things discarded, where trash ends up, as well as the danger of discarding hazardous materials. Twenty-five user friendly projects including direction and supplies needed reinforce the "reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink" philosophy. An interesting layout with simple black and white illustrations, boxed Trash Flashes, Words to Know, and Did You Know features to keep youngsters interested. The workbook format is perfect for classrooms to take on this subject as a group. The hands-on approach to a largely ignored subject is appealing, as well. A glossary, index and source for further study are included. Of course, it is printed on recycled paper by a company committed to "green" initiatives. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
