Synopsis
Gastrointestinal Oncology: A Critical Multidisciplinary Team Approach is the first evidence-based reference text designed for the multidisciplinary team of medical professionals involved in the investigation, diagnosis, and management of patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Written and edited by leading international experts in the field it sets the standard in clinical practice for dealing with esophageal, gastric, intestinal, colonic, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and other GI tumors.
The book is divided into twenty-five clinical chapters each addressing the specific cancers affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Each chapter is written by a team of authors, with each contributor specially chosen to represent a different role in the MDT. This multidisciplinary team approach reflects the current care of GI cancer patients and enables clinical decision making and patient management. All the chapters have been tried and tested in MDT meetings in leading cancer centers around the world.
Gastrointestinal Oncology: A Critical Multidisciplinary Team Approach provides in-depth evidence-based knowledge and is well illustrated throughout with color photographs, line drawings, and diagrams. This authoritative and practical resource is an essential reference for the entire MDT including gastroenterologists, hepatologists, GI surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation therapists, interventional radiologists, pathologists, specialist nurses, and clinical scientists.

Description:This book presents a multidisciplinary approach to gastrointestinal tumors. The different tumors of the digestive system are the central focus of the chapters.
Purpose:According to the author, the book is intended for multidisciplinary meetings dealing with tumors of the digestive system, a worthy objective, considering that these tumors are subject to a multidisciplinary approach. The book meets the objectives for the most part, although there are some shortcomings.
Audience:According to the author, the book is written for gastroenterologists, gastrointestinal surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, pathologists, and clinical scientists, as well those in training.
Features:This book covers the approach to tumors of the digestive system by the different specialists involved in the care of these patients, reflecting the now standard multidisciplinary approach to gastrointestinal tumors. Some of the shortcomings are due to the multidisciplinary nature of the book, where chapters differ depending on the choice of authors/specialties for the different tumors. For example, the endoscopic approach to esophageal adenocarcinoma is superbly covered, whereas a more detailed discussion of the role of endoscopy, especially endoscopic ultrasound, would be expected in the chapter on pancreatic cancer. Several images in the chapter on pancreatic cancer imaging have the wrong legends.
Assessment:Nonetheless, this is great book that will hopefully set a standard for a new type of book that reflects today's multidisciplinary approach to gastrointestinal tumors. However, it should be reviewed by the authors again for typos and mistakes in the text accompanying the images. Future efforts should focus on applying a standard format to covering the different tumors by the different specialists.
