School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-These books examine their respective subjects in depth. The authors look at science as a process of discovery and explain how each discipline developed in different cultures over time. Significant names and important terms are printed in bold and circled to guide students to further information in boxed areas and sidebars. Brief biographies of thinkers, inventors, and scientists are provided along with important experiments and the conclusions that were made in relation to them. Besides providing a chronology of the development of each scientific area, projections about future advancements are made. Each volume contains color photographs, illustrations, and diagrams to help explain the important concepts and discoveries. All four up-to-date volumes would be excellent supplements to the science curriculum. Anna Claybourne's Introduction to Genes and DNA (EDC, 2004), Steve Parker's Medicine (DK, 2000), Sheila Wyborny's Electricity (Gale, 2003), and Christopher Cooper's Matter (DK, 2000) are similar offerings for the same audience.-Ann Joslin, formerly at Erie County Public Library, PA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
