School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-These two volumes present general information in an attractively designed and sensibly organized format. Beatty offers brief introductions to such topics as cells and chromosomes, how genes are passed on, biotechnology, and genetic engineering. Mention is made of important figures in the field, such as Gregor Mendel, Thomas Hunt Morgan, James Watson, and Francis Crick, and of milestones, such as the completion of the Human Gene Map in 2000. A double-page diagram of chromosome and DNA structure is also included. Woodford offers overviews of the many phases and procedures of crime-scene investigations, collecting physical evidence, forensic science, and pathology. A full-page diagram of the original 16-point fingerprint system developed in Great Britain is shown. Both books highlight state-of-the-art equipment and testing techniques, and sidebars offer details about a particular technology or an important person or development in the field. Color photographs and diagrams appear throughout. The texts are never particularly engaging, but are always clear and straightforward.-Edward Sullivan, White Pine School, TN Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
