Children's Literature

Like the other volumes in "The Elements" series, this book reviews the periodic table, specifically noting where sulfur belongs. Sidebars discuss how molecules interact in chemical reactions, showing how the equations are balancedβ€”in this case, how sulfur and oxygen gas combine to form sulfur dioxide and how sulfur trioxide plus water results in the formation of sulfuric acid. The book explains how sulfur is purified and how it is used, for instance, to vulcanize rubber and in some medicines. Sulfur also contributes to the problem of acid rain. The book is attractive, with an inviting layout and many full-color photographs. A glossary and index are provided. 2001, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish, $22.79. Ages 9 up. Reviewer: Dr. Judy Rowen

Gr 4-8-These introductions offer clear, basic information, without oversimplification, in an appealing format. The books cover each element's history, where it is found, how it is extracted and purified, how it is used, and its chemical reactions. Phosphorous also includes fertilizers and environmental issues. Sulfur has sections on its role in fossil fuels and rubber tires, warfare explosives, and medicine. Numerous full-color photographs, drawings, and diagrams, as well as boxed sections with additional information, supplement the texts. The explanations and accompanying visuals that describe specific chemical reactions are especially helpful. In addition, each book has a double-page spread devoted to the periodic table. Useful additions.-Maren Ostergard, Bellevue Regional Library, WA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
