Children's Literature

Oxygen makes up one-fifth of the air around us. This is a greater percentage of oxygen than found on any other planet in the solar system. We cannot see it, feel it, taste it, or smell it, but we need to breathe it to stay alive. A French scientist, Antoine Lavoisier, who had experimented with the gas, named it oxygen. The Greek origin of the word means, "acid forming." This book is part of "The Elements" series which also includes Carbon, Nitrogen and Iron. Each book describes how the element behaves, its individual characteristics and how it is important to our lives. An index and glossary are part of each volume, and a colorful periodic chart is also included. An excellent series for the upper elementary or middle school science classroom.

Gr 5-8--These series titles cover where these substances are found, how they were discovered, their characteristics and reactions, and their importance in the human body and the environment. Each volume includes a double-page spread on the element's position in the periodic table. The captioned, full-color drawings, photographs, and diagrams clarify the text while boxed "Did You Know?" items offer interesting extensions to it. Environmental issues considered include pollution from noxious gases and acid rain in Nitrogen, and the thinning of the ozone layer in Oxygen. Informative, accessible science books that will be of interest for both general reading and report writing.--Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA
