Children's Literature

This attractive book will pull readers right in with an experiment pictured on the cover. Farndon succinctly explains body organs, systems and functions, presenting the complex human body in understandable terms, yet including considerable information. Plenty of colorful insets of detail and Did You Knows are included, along with interesting multicultural pictures of children in action and conducting experiments. Microscopic photos and MRI scans provide additional views of blood, the brain and so forth. Six experiments are included to test understanding of why the body functions as it does¾how breathing works, finding pulse and heartbeat, the effects of exercise, how digestion works, how to see water in the body and how to measure growth of body parts. Most can be conducted with materials in the home, except digestion, which requires iodine and special detergents. These are carefully laid out and depicted, then followed up with a nice statement about scientific methods and the need to always question methods and findings. The book includes a glossary and index, but unfortunately, there is no reference list for further study. An excellent introduction to the body through experiments that explain some basic scientific principles. The book is part of the "Science Experiments" series. 2002, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish, $24.21. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Elaine Wick
