Children's Literature

Transported back in time to the night that Washington crossed the Delaware, Matthew Carlton and the other members of the Adventure Club could never have imagined that such an adventure was in store for them. What started out as a simple sleepover in the back yard turned into the adventure of a lifetime after they were taken back in time by an enchanted rowboat on the lake in the woods. Now Matt and his friends are forced to fight with George Washington’s army as they sneak into Trenton to fight the Hessians, but Matt and his friends are more worried about staying together and figuring out how to return home than about fighting a battle. While the author’s effort to bring history to life is admirable, the narrative is somewhat awkward. The novel might appeal to children with an interest in history or a budding interest in the fantasy genre, but there are certainly other books that do a better job at presenting history or time travel to children just discovering a passion for reading.
