Library Journal

Gr 1-3-These simple overviews introduce the benefits of exercise and rest for health and enjoyment of life. The first title discusses elementary physiology, outlining how the parts of the body work together during activity and pinpointing the key organs and muscle groups used in climbing stairs, swimming, and different ball games. Rest! explores the tiring effect of activity on muscles and the brain and describes how the body slows down during sleep. Ways to encourage regular sleep are suggested, as are dealing with bad dreams and waking up during the night. Royston also warns of the negative physical, emotional, and mental effects of too little sleep. In both titles, each page features a large, color photo of a child or children and several simple sentences of text. The writing is clear and direct. Two similar books that offer more information are Kathy Feeney's Sleep Well: Why You Need to Rest, which includes a diagram of the sleep cycle and discusses somnambulism and nightmares, and her Get Moving: Tips on Exercise (both Bridgestone, 2001), which evaluates different activities and includes a discussion of good nutrition.-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
