School Library Journal
A handsome book on both valley glaciers and continental ice sheets . The format is excellent: clear type with plenty of white space, beautifully chosen and reproduced full-color photos, and high-quality paper. The information is also clearly presented--the same basic material covered in other standard works on the subject, such as Simon's Icebergs and Glaciers (Morrow, 1987) and the Nixons' Glaciers : Nature's Frozen Rivers (Dodd, 1980; o.p.). Side issues (e.g. the sinking of the Titanic leading to the formation of the International Ice Patrol) are presented in boxes. The glossary is good, but the index is not very complete, which may be a drawback as the book is not divided into chapters. The photos are a real help to the text. Drumlins, eskers, icebergs, etc. are shown not as diagrams, but as real features of real landscapes. This is both a wonderful browsing book and a good source for school reports. --Rosanne Cerny, Queens Borough Public Library, NYBook Details
