Synopsis

The 14 papers describe large bench-scale studies on how to use glycosyl hydrolases at the industrial level to depolymerize biomass polysaccharides, seen as the crucial step in converting biomass components into fermentable feedstocks for producing fuels and chemicals. Some deal directly with using mixtures of the enzymes in biomass containing cellulose and mannan, considering such aspects as the adsorption of specific enzymes in a mixture to macromolecular substrates, the effects on enzyme efficiency of producing enzyme mixtures in the presence of the target biomass, factors influencing the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosics, and enzymes acting on soluble and insoluble mannans. Others take up fundamental and exploratory themes. No date or location is noted for the symposium. Distributed in the US by Oxford University Press.
