Gr 7 Up-This collective biography features Alexander the Great, Augustus, Attila, Charlemagne, Genghis Khan, and Napoleon. Each chapter includes a map and black-and-white illustrations. Quotes are footnoted and annotated bibliographies (including Web sites) are a plus. Unfortunately, although the material is interesting and readable, it is laden with errors. Names are misspelled. Dates are wrong (including those of Napoleon's birth and marriage and that of his 1799 coup). Other facts are incorrect or misleading. Also, despite the claim in the foreword of "demonstrating to the reader exactly where biographers find their information," quotations are frequently altered from their sources.
