Children's Literature

As an early chapter reader for grades two through four, this nonfiction book features today's women athletes in a variety of sports fields. The women are soccer player Mia Hamm, basketball player Rebecca Lobo, track and field competitor Marion Jones, gymnast Shannon Miller, ice skater Michelle Kwan, and tennis players Venus and Serena Williams. Photographs of the athletes in action illustrate the book but are inconsistent. The number of photos range from one per chapter to five. A close-up photo of each woman is not shown. The text contains facts and figures that would work well if organized in a statistics sidebar. The book does not contain a table of contents or glossary. 2001, Random House, $3.99. Ages 7 to 10.
