Gr 3-5-These well-formatted, colorful books have readable, interesting texts, with each spread devoted to a different topic. Pakistani includes a discussion of the problems Muslims have faced in the U.S. since 9/11. Japanese devotes space to the World War II internment camps. All three books cover the history of the home country and food and other cultural contributions made to the new one. Each title also has a map showing where the immigrants settled in the U.S., a chart indicating when they immigrated and how many came, and a time line. When compared to the "Our Cultural Heritage" series (The Child's World), these books have an edge because of the inclusion of short personal narratives. The human element is emphasized by introducing a real person in the first chapter and inserting comments from that individual and other immigrants on succeeding pages. The last chapter brings each book together by telling what has happened to the person spotlighted. If easy materials on immigrant populations are needed, these titles and those in the above-mentioned series cover the subject well.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
